Anna Walsh Lola Hair Studio Cambridge MA

What does it take to be a successful hair stylist and salon owner?

This is the story of a girl who dreamed of working in a hair salon…

Now I am the proud owner one. Lola Hair Studio is a busy and successful salon in Cambridge.

My intent with sharing this story is to portray the grit, hard work, passion, and vision one needs to get what you want out of life. You do not have to be a hairstylist to relate to this story.  I am expressing that you shouldn’t be afraid to put in the time and effort, even if you start from the bottom to get your dream career (and in this case, dream kitchen).

One thing I would like to share that isn’t in the video is of the time I was studying and working for what seemed like 24 hrs/day. When I look back, it was some of the best times of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life now and would not trade it for anything, but some of my favorite memories are my adventures where I gain experience, confidence, and knowledge. Furthermore, some of the people who came along during those times are still on this journey with me (Jannelle, Kerri, Julia, and Tara). We had a lot of fun building a successful business, and you can do it too.

On a different note, I am so proud of my kitchen - It is everything I ever wanted. I’ve lived in houses or apartments with some pretty beat up kitchens in my day.  My kitchen represents my journey toward being a successful hairstylist and business owner. I am glad to be where I am today. Let me share a little bit about the path that led me to have this fabulous kitchen.

Since I was in high school I was always interested in hairstyling. Why? I have really difficult hair! I had to do a lot of work to figure out what worked and what didn’t work for my hair. But that is what created my passion for hairstyling, and I’ve been loving this profession ever since.

After I went to Bentley University and started working, I realized that I didn’t like corporate America. I disliked always doing the same thing every day and I felt like I was missing something. At 27 years old, I decided to go to cosmetology school, and I haven’t looked back. I was mesmerized and wanted to immerse myself in all things beauty.

While I was working on getting my cosmetology license, I found a job at a salon to work at the front desk. Although it was a minimum wage job ($7.50/hr at the time), I wanted to surround myself in that environment and learn as much as possible. At the time, I lived in an apartment with my friends, working as a waitress and bartender to keep up with all my bills. My former classmates were doing well in their careers, and I was super busy and just scraping by, but I didn’t care! I was happy and feeling very fortunate to be able to pursue my passion.

After I got my license, I became an assistant at the salon I worked at. I graduated from the assistant program very quickly because I practiced all the time. I was obsessed with all things hair. I was the first one in the studio and the last one out every day. Since it was something I loved doing, I wanted to be great at it. My mindset is the reason why I am here today. I worked hard because I did not only want to be successful, but I have a passion for hair. I love the chaos of a busy Saturday in the salon and thrive in that environment.

I learned many skills on my journey to where I am today. Only 5% of hairstylists become successful in their hairstyling careers or in their business’, and I was determined to be one of them. I had an eye for design and loved to make people feel more beautiful. Starting as a stylist, I had to learn how to connect with each client in order to deliver the best results. I realized that it is essential to communicate with my clients as more than a hairstylist, but also as a therapist, an entertainer, and a friend. Education was also crucial to do my best.

Although we never want to make mistakes, it is an essential opportunity to better ourselves because it allows us to learn.

I worked at that same salon for 12 years before renting a chair. When I was in between salons and  rented one, it was good, but also a lot of work. I was doing so many things at once, and it was exhausting. I also missed working with and learning from other excellent stylists. There’s nothing like being part of a culture where everyone works together and supports each other.

Then one day, as I was driving, I drove past a building with a sign that read “For Lease,” and I knew it was a sign. I dove right into starting my business. I opened Lola Hair Studio. Six years later, here we are! It started with just me, and now we have 12 extraordinary employees!

It was challenging to get to where I am today, but I am grateful for every step in this journey. I often struggled, but kept going because of my love for the hair industry. I was always open to new opportunities and had a positive mindset. I love working with a team where everyone is driven to be successful and grow together.

Now I have my own business and also my dream kitchen, and I couldn’t be happier! I am proud of it because I worked hard for it, and it represents my journey and my accomplishments. It shows me that anything is possible with hard work, passion, and motivation, and I hope it does the same for you.
